Sones sueño del Maya, for orchestral winds and percussion, is based on fragments of Pre-Columbian Mayan music, passed down through generations, and captured on tape by ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax. The title translates to “Dream Music of the Mayans,” a reference to the Mayan belief that melodies for their songs were often conceived while in a dream state. Flutes and marimba are the pillars of Mayan music, and provide the primary soundworld for this work.
The other element here is the Guatemalteco, a dance rhythm, in 6/8 time, with strong accents on the 3rd and 5th beats of the measure. (This is the source of the ostinato for the second half of the work.)
The performance is by the University of Wisconsin Symphonic Wind Ensemble, conducted by James Smith, and recorded in Mills Concert Hall, Madison, on 12 October 2003.
